(Dis) Incentives & The Where To Live Project

Charlie Monger has a famous quote and it goes like this:

Show me the incentive and I will show you the outcome

And it is true.

For example, Our dog Ollie never listens to me.  I mean, never.  Except… when I give him a reason to (check out vid):

Leveraging his love of cured meat.

People are the same way… and in my experience it is more effective  to set up incentives than to issue mandates or edicts or new rules.  No one likes to be told what to do but they sure like to do things that is in their interest.  Human nature, my friend.

Why do I bring this up?

I have lived in Chicago for 31 winters (ouch) ….meaning since 1990. Although I love the “Big Windy”, it is time for us to leave and come in from the cold. Also, we would like to find a place that actually has incentives to make it our home …OR… at least doesn’t disincentivize us to stay (i.e., taxes, crime, bloated unions/bureaucracy).

Where is my Calabrese?

Today starts our “Where To Live” project – slow travel to find our personal utopia.  The Little Lady and I have purged 80% of our stuff …downsized… and now we are ready to wander.

Stay tuned.  First up:  Costa Rica, or translated from Spanish, The Rich Coast.

I hope we like it.
